The Aging Process
What causes our skin to become wrinkled as we age?
There are two classifications of aging; intrinsic and extrinsic:
1 – Intrinsic aging is the natural aging process that takes place over the years regardless of outside influences.
2 – Extrinsic aging occurs in addition to intrinsic aging as a result of sun and environmental damage (tobacco use and exposure to pollution, for example). Extrinsic aging shows up as fine lines, wrinkles, freckles, sun spot formation, with an exaggerated loss of collagen and elastin.
These processes can give the skin the appearance of roughness, uneven tone, brown patches, thin skin and deep wrinkles but with treatment we can work to change these results.
Skin Rejuvenation therapy aids the skin to naturally repair in the following ways:
- Moisturizes the skin by increasing circulation of blood and lymph to the face
- Improves muscle tone, firmness and elasticity of the skin
- Helps lift sagging and drooping
- Fills out sunken areas
- Helps eliminate fine wrinkles and soften deeper wrinkles
- Improves facial colour, leaving glowing and radiant skin
- Brightens the eyes and helps lift drooping eyelids.
- Improves hormonal balance to reduce acne
- Softens Acne scarring
- Reduces stress evident on the face & slows the aging process from within
- Leaves you feeling refreshed, relaxed and rejuvenated
- Stimulates collagen production
After the age of 20, we produce about 1% less collagen in our skin each year. As a result, our skin becomes thinner and more fragile as we age. Our skin will also experience diminished functioning of our sweat and oil glands, less elastin production.
Over time with recurring facial expressions, combined with a thinning of the skin and declining of our collagen production, our facial muscles leave their marks with what we refer to as wrinkles (the furrows between our eyebrows and those crow’s feet at the outer corners of our eyes). Meanwhile other underused muscles begin to lose tone and sag, such as the areas around our jaw, chin, and neck.
Our skin rejuvenation treatment helps to increase your own natural collagen production, filling in your fine lines and wrinkles. The treatment increases blood circulation, allowing for a better delivery of nutrients to your face.
Some of the benefits of skin rejuvenation include an improvement in the firmness and moisture of skin; a tightening of the pores; a reduction in dark circles or puffiness under the eyes; a lifting of sagging skin, double chins, and drooping eyelids; and a healthy, glowing complexion.
What is Collagen and why is it important for your skin?
As mentioned, our collagen production decreases by one percent each year after we the age of 20. After the age of 30, our collagen level drops 1%-2% every year. By age 40, we have lost 10%-20% of our collagen and by 50, we are down 20%-40%.
Collagen, the most abundant protein in our body, is formed by the linking and winding together of amino acids to form collagen fibers. Collagen synthesis, (the process of forming new collagen) is an essential part of wound healing and gives structure and strength to our skin.
