How to keep motivated when you’ve fallen off the fitness wagon.

As a veteran fitness coach of over 20 years this is probably the question that is both asked of me and intrigues me the most when it comes to fitness.

We have many members who have trained with us for multiple years and now commit 2 or more times a week on a consistent basis depending on their goals, their schedule and their lifestyle.

Everyone wants to think of motivation like a gemstone that you somehow discover in a hidden location, then once found, you wear for a source of infinite motivation.

Sorry. There is no motivation gemstone.

One of the biggest myths is that successful people are constantly motivated. Remember, social media only captures what you want a person to see. You see the perfectly executed squat in a sports bra, versus the look on your face when it’s 6am and you can barely open your eyes and you’ve hit snooze 10x.  As a result, I think we have created the illusion that this gemstone of motivation, this fairytale land is devoid of bad moods, bad days, and so-so workouts.  Usually once or twice a week I will hear someone say, “Oh man, I’m just not feeling it today but I’m so glad I came in!”.  If I had a loonie for every time I heard someone say to me, “I debated about coming in today, but I feel so much better and glad I did” let’s just say I would be able to pay for downtown parking for a long timeJ

Here’s the truth.

No one lives in a constant state of motivation.  We all have ‘those days’ when we don’t feel like choosing the best food, hitting the gym, paying the bills, mowing the lawn or actually folding that pile of laundry that has been in the basket for a week.  Successful people don’t just work when they feel like working, instead, they are disciplined enough to get the job done regardless of their mood.

If you always want to feel a certain way before you act, don’t expect to ever accomplish anything worthwhile. Why?  Too much time will be spent procrastinating as you sit around waiting for the perfect mood to arrive. Meanwhile, your successful competitors will be busy putting in the work whether they want to or not.

One of the keys to becoming more successful is recognizing the simple fact that life is challenging. People ask me all the time when is the perfect time to train for the best results and my answer is always the same: the time you will ACTUALLY go do it.

Our training membership model is actually built about this premise.  Our 3 and 12 month members don’t book a time to train but always know they have a coach to work with. We know that making a commitment to train can be hard so making it happen at 6am or 6pm doesn’t matter, what matters is that time investment of training was well spent and that the workout that was built for you was completed.

As an old saying suggests, first you make your habits and then your habits make you. A disciplined person gets up and gets things done, even if they don’t really feel like doing it. They don’t wait for the perfect mood to arrive before beginning. Instead, they cherish the feeling of accomplishment and they focus on their why. We ask our members to think about their “why” and focus on that as their personal incentive, as that is what will keep them focused on the days that are hard to make it in to see us.

Here’s the truth: You don’t need to be motivated to succeed. What you need is the self-discipline to put in the work whether you want to or not and know why you want to train (if you are not sure there are some pretty amazing reasons you should invest some time into your health). Successful people don’t waste time looking for motivation. They are too busy putting in the work and focusing on that awesome feeling when you complete that last set!
