We completely understand you might feel nervous coming in for your first Pelvic Health Physiotherapy appointment!
We want to give you an outline of what to expect to help ease any apprehension that you might understandably have.
We want to explain the process, answer some of the most common questions our clients have had and make you feel comfortable before you come in for your first visit.
The Step by Step Process:
1 – Our physiotherapy clinic is located in the basement of our facility. A member of our team with great you at the front door and escort you down to our private clinic.
2 – We have multiple change rooms and washrooms available to use before, during and after your treatment.
3 – When you arrive in the clinic we have some paperwork to complete as you might of expected! You can relax in our clinic lounge and relax while you complete our intake forms. This information will give us a better understanding of how we can best help you!
4 – After completing your paperwork you will meet our pelvic health physiotherapist Cassie Dionne. She will have your private room set to discuss your symptoms, questions and past health history. After chatting about your health history and your current symptoms we will evaluate your posture (specifically your back and hips) to determine if they perhaps might be contributing to your symptoms.
5 – At this point, based on your comfort level, we then perform an internal exam to assess your strength, endurance and the general functioning of your pelvic floor. Because of the location of these muscles, an internal exam is the best method for assessment. **Please note it is very important to us that you know if you are not comfortable doing an internal exam during your first session it is not a requirement.
6 – After we complete your assessment, together with Cassie, you will review the results of your assessment as well as a developing a plan and the expected length of your treatment.
Is the internal exam similar to an pap assessment with my family doctor?
No, pelvic health physiotherapy is very different than an exam done by your physician or gynaecologist. First, we have much more time to do the consultation and assessment and secondly we do not use any big equipment (no speculum!). Cassie will walk you through what she is doing every step of the way to make sure you are comfortable at all times.
Why do I need an internal assessment? Do I have to have one?
Unlike your thigh or arm muscles that are easily visible, your pelvic floor muscles are inside of your body and just like those bigger muscles; they can develop weakness, trigger points, and “knots”. These dysfunctions can lead to conditions such as incontinence, pelvic floor prolapse, and dyspareunia (pain with intercourse). This is why the best way to assess these muscles is to do so internally so we can feel the strength, endurance, coordination and activity level of these muscles (under-active, hyperactive, in spasm), as well as any tenderness, soft tissue restrictions, or anything else that might be going on. Though there are some things we can assess and advise on without doing an internal assessment, it will not be as effective or successful in order to get you back to 100%.
What is biofeedback? How does it work? What does it feel like?
Biofeedback for pelvic floor muscle retraining is a treatment to help patients learn to strengthen or relax their pelvic floor muscles in order to improve bowel or bladder function and decrease some types of pelvic floor pain. It is a painless process that uses special sensors and a computer monitor to display information about muscle activity. This information or “feedback” is used to gain sensitivity, and with practice, control over pelvic floor muscle function. An important part of pelvic floor biofeedback therapy is consistent practice of the pelvic floor muscle exercises at home. With biofeedback, an individual can learn to stop using the incorrect muscles and start using the correct ones.
